The war is a bizarre social experiment: every so often, an alarm triggers, and millions of people rush to lock themselves in small, reinforced rooms. I've found myself in various shelters, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with random strangers while ballistic missiles headed toward some unknown location in our city.
While it sounds terrifying, I've found these moments to be as much about human interaction and compassion as they are about fear. There is something about being huddled together in such an anxious situation that dissolves barriers, forming connections between people who would otherwise never speak.
The stories below were collected from different shelters around Tel Aviv during the war with Iran in 2026.
אני יניב. בזמן המלחמה עם אירן, מצאתי את עצמי מסתובב ברחבי תל-אביב, לבד או עם חברים. מידי פעם נשמעה אזעקה, שהובילה אותי לשבת במקלט אקראי בסמוך לזרים מוחלטים.
גיליתי שהרגעים האלה עוסקים באינטראקציה אנושית, לא פחות מאשר בפחד. יש משהו בהצטופפות המשותפת בתוך מצב חרדתי שממיס מחסומים, ויוצר חיבורים בין אנשים שאחרת לא היו מחליפים מילה.

Here with my business partner (left) in some random shelter downtown. We ran into a guy who worked with him many years ago.
One thing led to another, and it turns out the guy had a 'beef' with my partner over an insignificant incident. We ended up having a therapy session under fire, and it finished with a group hug. Even the kid was moved.

Under the iconic Dizengoff Mall, it's a scene, not a shelter. A tent city mixed with a hipster summer camp and a singles festival. There's no war here, just a party with the option to hook up.

A shelter in North Tel Aviv. Turns out that in the city's periphery, people are much less 'into' small talk.

Florentin. A shelter that doubles as an art gallery. A sense of security draws an eclectic crowd: starving artists, high-tech nomads, street dwellers, and toddlers.

Think of a multi-level parking garage as a panic barometer. The unbothered crowd stops at Level -1. Those with anxiety tendencies descend to Level -2. In this shelter on Osishkin St., there was an elderly man who launched into a loud monologue about the days of the legendary basketball stadium. Turns out there used to be a league there for market stall owners from the Carmel Market - on Friday afternoons, a time slot that didn't sit well with his daily nap.
He learned the hard way that it's not recommended to make comments to someone who owns a market stall. Let's just say the league continued with full vigor.
